Cowboys add two defensive backs via NFL waivers

FRISCO, Texas — Go ahead and add two more players to the initial 53-man roster of the Dallas Cowboys, now that the first wave of regular season waivers has concluded. Seeking to bolster their depth at cornerback heading into their Week 1 battle against the Philadelphia Eagles, they’ll welcome Trikweze Bridges and Reddrick “Reddy” Steward to the club.

Bridges and Steward were both awarded to the Cowboys via waivers on Tuesday, moves that will require them to free up two seats to make room for the new additions — as anyone claimed on waivers must be added to the active roster.

Those moves are tied to cornerbacks Andrew Booth and Zion Childress, both of whom being waived on Tuesday. If either or both clear waivers, there’s a more than solid chance either or both could end up on the practice squad.

As a related aside, Tyrus Wheat was the only player waived by the Cowboys who was claimed by another team, heading to the Detroit Lions for head coach Dan Campbell. Wheat climbed his way up from being an undrafted free agent signing of Dallas’ in 2023 to a key special teamer depth piece at defensive end, but the bottleneck of talent at the edge forced the team into a difficult decision on Wheat.

Bridges heads to Dallas by way of the Los Angeles Chargers, a seventh-round pick in 2025 that didn’t survive cuts by Gang Green. No stranger to bright lights, however, he spent his collegiate career putting plays on film for Oregon before ultimately transferring to Florida in 2024.

He’ll now reunite with rookie linebacker Shemar James in North Texas.

Steward, a former undrafted free agent who signed on with the Chicago Bears in 2024, also has a stint with the Minnesota Vikings this offseason before being waived in late August. Hailing from Troy, the young defensive back was a two-time First-team All-Sun Belt talent in 2022 and again in 2023, hoping to parlay his collegiate success to the NFL level.

As it remains unknown if All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs will be available against the Eagles, and with rookie third-round pick Shevon Revel joining Josh Butler on the reserve list to begin the season, it’s not unfathomable to see Brian Schottenheimer look to deepen the position.
