Ex-Packers WR says Steelers’ Aaron Rodgers wanted him to sign — but explains why he passed

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers recently put on his infamous general manager hat — but this time, unfortunately, he wasn’t able to reunite with his former teammate.

On Thursday, The Athletic’s Matt Barrows reported that ex-Packers WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling’s choice to sign with the San Francisco 49ers over a reunion with Rodgers on the Steelers was a “50/50” decision.

“He wanted me back over there,” Valdes-Scantling said, via Barrows.

Valdes-Scantling then admitted that while it was a toss-up between the two landing spots, he ultimately decided that signing with San Francisco was the best career decision.

On Thursday, the 49ers officially signed Valdes-Scantling to their practice squad — putting an end to any potential Green Bay reunion in the Steel City.

This wasn’t the first time Rodgers was interested in a Green Bay pass catcher, as a few days ago insider Bill Huber claimed Rodgers had called to inquire about the availability of Packers WR Romeo Doubs.
