Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Willy Adames joined the team in 2021 and has since emerged as one of baseball’s top offensive players at his position.
However, the offseason could mark a new chapter of his career as a free agent.
The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets have both reportedly been linked to the shortstop.
According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, the Dodgers “will be in the mix”. However, they haven’t yet offered him a contract, refuting a previous report.
“Willy Adames, shortstop: The 29-year-old is coming off a 32-homer season with the Milwaukee Brewers and has hit the second-most home runs in the past six seasons among shortstops, behind only (Francisco Lindor),” Passan said.
“Though he makes all kinds of sense for the San Francisco Giants, Adames’ willingness to play third base ties him to the Mets and (New York Yankees), too. The (Los Angeles Dodgers) will be in the mix as well. Adames should cash in, though any reports of contracts already offered are incorrect.”
It’s almost certain that Adames is done in Milwaukee. Brewers manager Pat Murphy doesn’t expect him to return because of his asking price.
“You see the numbers he’s probably looking (for), and I don’t think we’re going to come up with that right now,” Murphy said, according to Andrew Wagner of Forbes.
“That’s not prudent for our group.”
Adames expressed interest in re-signing with the Brewers after the Wild Card Series, but on Sunday, Murphy mentioned he’s already exploring other options.
One possibility includes shifting Platinum Glove winner Brice Turang from second base to shortstop.
Adames did receive a qualifying offer from the Brewers which means they’ll receive draft-pick compensation if he signs with another team in free agency.
