About this rating

A rumor circulating in late August 2025 claimed former head coach of the Green Bay Packers football team, Mike Holmgren, was dead.

For example, an Aug. 26, 2025, a Facebook post on the Packers Powerhouse group shared a photograph of Holmgren in a Green Bay Packers jacket, along with the caption:

GOODBYE TO A TRUE ICON 💔: The NFL community is devastated by the passing of former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike Holmgren. The man who reshaped Packers football in the 1990s, Holmgren built a dynasty around Brett Favre, rekindled the spirit of Titletown, and returned Lambeau Field to its place as the ultimate symbol of grit, discipline, and passion. Before his passing, he left a touching message for Packers fans – the people he always called “the soul of the team”

The Packers Powerhouse Facebook group also posted a link to an article about the purported death in the comments section, which led to an advertisement-filled article on the sport.clubofsocial.com website. Other posts on Facebook and X shared the same rumor and story link.

But we found no available evidence on news outlets that Holmgren had died. Had he actually died, the news would be widely reported on sports pages as well as the social media accounts of the Green Bay Packers, the National Football League (NFL) and other affiliated organizations. As such, we rate this claim as false.

A check of the Green Bay Packers social media pages (where he was head coach from 1992-1998) as well as the NFL pages on Aug. 25 and Aug. 26 found no information about Holmgren’s death. We even looked at the official social media accounts of the Seattle Seahawks, where he was the head coach from 1999 to 2008 and found no such report.

The article on sport.clubofsocial.com also gave no official reason for his death, nor did it link to an authentic source, like a family member or his representatives. The article instead made a number of general observations about his career:

As the football world reflects on his life and career, there is no doubt that Mike Holmgren will always be remembered as a pioneer, a teacher, and a man who dedicated his life to the sport he loved. His vision transformed a struggling franchise into a dynasty, his mentorship produced generations of leaders, and his words continue to resonate with the fans who adored him. Though he may be gone, the legacy he built lives on in every cheer at Lambeau Field and every memory of the glory days he helped create.

We reached out to the sports agency representing Holmgren and will update this story if we get more information.
