In the yard of a small factory, a stray pregnant dog had been living quietly, cared for only by the scraps the factory owner offered her. She was never a pet, just a wanderer who found safety there.
One afternoon, as the man’s daughter played outside, a sudden scream broke the air followed by a sharp hiss. A cobra had slipped into the yard. Before the man could react, the stray lunged, throwing herself between the snake and the child.
The fight was brutal. When it ended, the cobra lay still, the child was safe, and the dog collapsed in blood. As the man knelt beside her, she looked up one last time and wagged her tail, as if to say she knew she had done her job
He buried her in his family’s cemetery, whispering through tears, “She was the pet I should have adopted”
