San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch, head coach Kyle Shanahan and their staff were tasked with trimming their rosters down from 90 players to 53 by the NFL’s deadline on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. ET, and they were able to accomplish that task.
While many of the transactions were reported in the days, hours and minutes leading up to the deadline, the 49ers held some of their cards close to their chest, withholding some transactions until their official announcement after 4 p.m. ET had come and gone.

Those moves included wide receiver Robbie Chosen, offensive lineman Michael Dunn, edge rusher Jonathan Garvin, edge rusher Trevis Gipson, wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins, cornerback Fabian Moreau, wide receiver Malik Turner and punter Thomas Morstead getting released.
Chosen and Morstead are probably the most interesting moves of the bunch. Chosen looked to have a connection with Purdy during their time together on the field, and Morstead was the team’s only punter. With that knowledge, it wouldn’t be surprising if either or both returned before Week 1.
San Francisco also waived wide receiver Junior Bergen, offensive lineman Drake Nugent, tight end Brayden Willis and offensive lineman Nick Zakelj. With Nugent and Zakelj out, the 49ers are trusting rookies Connor Colby and Drew Moss as important backups in their interior.
Shanahan and Lynch also activated edge rusher Yetur Gross-Matos from PUP, moved wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and safety Malik Mustapha from active/PUP to reserve/PUP (forcing them to miss four games), moved quarterback Kurtis Rourke from active/NFI to reserve/NFI (forcing him to miss six games) and placed defensive lineman Kevin Givens ((with a designation to return) and cornerback Jakob Robinson on IR (ending his season).
