It couldn’t be clearer who the Patriots should add as their next backup QB

Seahawks 50 Seasons - Russell Wilson | Seattle Seahawks 50 Seasons – Seahawks.comThroughout the offseason, there have been questions about the Patriots’ quarterback room behind Drake Maye for various reasons. Some analysts and fans were intrigued by the addition of veteran Joshua Dobbs, while others weren’t sure about the value he brought to the roster or Maye’s development.

The same could be said about Ben Wooldridge, but he was released not long after his lackluster performance against the Giants last week in the preseason finale. So now the Patriots need a solid QB3 on their roster, and Mike Vrabel has made it known that they are looking at who is, or might become, available.

The roster cut deadline will inevitably have some solid players hit the free agent market that they could look into, and there is one name that continues to be near the top of the list: Giants’ backup Tommy DeVito.

So much so, that even ESPN’s Mike Reiss name drops him when discussing what the Patriots might do to fill the vacant role.

If the Giants move on from their backup quarterback, the Patriots should try to bring him to New England

After seeing how impressive DeVito was against the Patriots’ defense last week, there’s good reason for the 27-year-old to be on their radar. The Giants have a packed quarterback room led by Russell Wilson, the expected starter, and they have two backups they plan to work with in Jameis Winston and rookie Jaxson Dart.

Because Dart is expected to be their eventual starter, there’s no room for DeVito on the roster now or in the future. And based on his performance recently, there’s reason to believe teams will be calling about his availability, and the Patriots should be one of them.

Although he might not be exactly what they need in a backup, if they were hoping to get a more tested veteran to support Maye, DeVito looks like a more competent player they could rely on if, for any reason, Maye had to leave a game early.

That doesn’t appear to be the case with Dobbs, as his preseason performances weren’t all that thrilling, making DeVito far more appealing now and in the long term.

There’s a good chance New York tries to take advantage of this new fascination across the league for DeVito and attempt to trade him rather than outright cut him to get something in return, and even if that’s the route they take, the Patriots should get on the phone. It likely wouldn’t take much to get a deal done, but it also won’t be much easier to get him in the door if he’s a free agent, especially if he’s promised at starting potential elsewhere.

No matter what, the Patriots have no reason not to inquire. Other quarterbacks will become available, but they might not be as much of what appears to be a sure thing with DeVito. He looks to be worth the risk, and they could easily be rewarded with his performance when called upon.
