The Atlanta Braves have a difficult path back to being a contender next season and beyond.
It’s going to require a lot to fall into place.
The starting rotation is one of those areas that needs to improve, and David O’Brien from The Athletic believes moving starting pitcher Reynaldo López to the bullpen could actually help the team.
“Switch López to a setup or closer role – one less move to make in an offseason when the Braves will need to add multiple relievers – and replace him in the rotation with rookie sensation Hurston Waldrep, and you’re one starter away from completing a deep, dynamic rotation,” wrote O’Brien.
“Add a proven veteran for depth – the kind of signing Charlie Morton might’ve been last winter – and you’re set. Younger arms, namely top prospect JR Ritchie, could be plugged into the rotation at some point, as injuries can and almost always do happen.”
López has only made one appearance so far this season, and it was far from perfect.
He conceded three runs in five innings for the Braves and struck out just one batter. O’Brien’s proposal could work for the Braves as starters who struggle have found success in the bullpen.
Adding a proven veteran to the rotation would certainly help Atlanta’s contention plans next year. However, Waldrep has only made four appearances (three starts) this season.
Even if he adds a few more starts, it would be a big gamble to guarantee him a spot in the rotation next season.
