Cubs urged to sign $29 million All-Star as Juan Soto backup plan | Sporting News

The Chicago Cubs failed to meet expectations in 2024. They are longshots to add Juan Soto but could sign other star players to improve their roster before Opening Day.

While many fans expected the Cubs to make a run at Soto, it seems unlikely as they do not have a meeting set up with the superstar yet. While listing free agents the Cubs could sign as backup plans, FanSided’s Jacob Mountz named Joc Pederson.

“Joc Pederson played for the Cubs during their 2021 campaign before being traded to the Braves,” wrote Mountz. “The former Dodgers and Braves postseason hero is coming off a resurgent year with the Arizona Diamondbacks that saw him slash .275/.393/.515/.908 with 23 home runs.”

Pederson could bring some serious power from the left side of the plate. Also, he would not be an expensive addition for the Cubs. Spotrac projects him to sign a two-year, $29 million deal in free agency. While he is a two-time All-Star, he is far from a perfect signing.

“Among the downsides, besides his struggles against southpaws, would be his defense. Pederson didn’t play the field at all in 2024. No matter who signs him, he would most likely be relegated to the DH role,” wrote Mountz. “Since the Cubs don’t seem to have a dedicated DH, a reunion with Pederson makes perfect sense.”

Pederson could fill in as the DH for Craig Counsell in 2025. Most importantly, if the Cubs plan to compete in the postseason, Pederson’s track record could be huge.

“In 195 postseason at-bats, Pederson maintains a postseason batting average of .256 with 12 home runs, several of which proved decisive in tough games,” wrote Mountz. “Pederson may never be named MVP, but his bat can substantially improve the Cubs’ lineup for a rather low sum and bring them into a glorious ‘Joctober.'”
