Now that Minnesota Twins fans know that the Pohlad family will remain the principal owners of the team moving forward, the question becomes what does the decision mean for the Twins’ offseason plans. There’s been some impression that the fire sale at the deadline could continue in the offseason, while other paths have been floated that have the Twins returning to contention in 2026.
That path certainly exists, especially with how strong the Twins’ farm system currently is, but it would take a level of investment from the front office that they haven’t had in the last year. That is the leading reason why some believe the Twins will continue their fire sale this offseason, with Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report suggesting that Byron Buxton could be on the move this winter.
“Byron Buxton does have a full no-trade clause, and he said during the All-Star break that he had no intention of waiving it to be dealt this summer. But after the Twins burned their roster to a crisp a few weeks later, he might feel a bit differently, now that he’s back from the IL and probably looking around the clubhouse as puzzled as the John Travolta gif from Pulp Fiction.”
Yes, in theory, it would make sense for the Twins to entertain trading Buxton if they were going to commit to a full rebuild. Turning 32 in December, earning over $15MM until 2029, Buxton is at the top of the list in terms of potential trade candidates. An All-Star this season, the Twins would get a haul of prospects if they were to make Buxton available.
This Twins trade rumor is getting old fast but Bleacher Report won’t drop it
Where the idea loses all credibility is that Buxton has said multiple times since July that he has no interest in waiving his no-trade clause. Even after the deadline, Buxton remained the focal leader in the clubhouse, addressing the team after the Major League roster was decimated.
When it comes to an offseason trade candidate for the Twins, Joe Ryan would be the name to keep an eye on. Unlike Buxton, there is a stronger case to be made that Ryan could be a part of the long-term plans for a Twins team in the middle of a reset. But, there’s no question he would be among the top starting pitchers on the trade market if the Twins make him available. That could be the reason why the Twins are willing to trade Ryan this offseason.
