The San Francisco 49ers traded a sixth-round pick to the Washington Commanders for running back Brian Robinson on Friday.
With superstar Christian McCaffrey set to enter the 2025 campaign as the 49ers’ lead running back, this trade builds the position’s depth. Robinson joins Jordan James and former Wisconsin Badger Isaac Guerendo as McCaffrey’s primary backups.

Guerendo is entering his second NFL season after the 49ers selected him in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL draft. The former Badger and Louisville Cardinal appeared in 16 games as a rookie, starting three. He totaled 84 carries, 420 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns, plus added 15 catches for 152 receiving yards. His best performance was in a Week 14 start against the Chicago Bears, during which he took 15 carries for 78 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Guerendo saw that extended time as McCaffrey battled injuries throughout the campaign. While the veteran is healthy entering 2025, the 49ers are wise to build a strong collection of backup options.
Robinson’s addition gives Guerendo competition for the primary backup position. The former Washington Commander will likely be used in short-yardage and goal-line situations; he scored 20 touchdowns over his first three NFL seasons. Guerendo, fueled by elite speed, projects as more of an early-down, home-run threat.
San Francisco’s running back carry breakdown will be worth watching as the team begins its 2025 season with a trip to Seattle on Sept. 7.
