REPORT: Patriots’ Pursuit of Trey Hendrickson Sparks Fresh Doubts

Patriots Urged To Reconsider Trey Hendrickson Interest

Mike Vrabel New England Patriots head coach

The New England Patriots have reportedly been looking into the possibility of acquiring a certain All-Pro; defensive end, Trey Hendrickson.

Indeed, general manager, Eliot Wolf, said on Monday that the Patriots are willing to move off a high draft pick in exchange for the right player who could benefit the organization.

Wolf did not specify any particular players, but given the reports and speculation surrounding a Hendrickson trade in general, it makes sense that a play for the current Cincinnati Bengal could well be on the cards.

However, Chad Graff of The Athletic believes a move for Hendrickson – or fellow rumored target,  Terry McLaurin – would be a mistake for New England, if it resulted in the Pats losing an early-round draft pick in compensation.

New England Advised Against Sending Away High Draft Pick For Hendrickson?

“Trading for either of them makes more sense for a team closer to competing for a Super Bowl, not a Patriots team that isn’t expected to compete for a conference title in 2025.” Graff writes, “The Pats have the money and cap space to improve the roster next offseason, and sticking to their guns now gives their young players a chance to make an impression this season.”

Graff cites alternative, younger options already on the roster who could make a big step this upcoming season, as a reason for not pulling the trigger on a high-octane deal – alongside the fact that it would necessitate the Patriots giving a very expensive deal to a player who will be 30 years old for the majority of the 2025 season.

“Maybe rookie wide receiver Kyle Williams plays great and lessens the need at that position.” Graff continues, “Maybe Keion White steps up as an edge rusher. Maybe K’Lavon Chaisson’s strong offseason turns into a breakout performance. Or maybe rookie Bradyn Swinson looks like a Day 3 steal on the edge.”

“…It’s not just that trading for McLaurin or Hendrickson would cost a valuable draft pick, but more that the whole reason they want trades in the first place is because they want top-of-market money and multiyear deals.”

What Can The Patriots Do To Level-Up Instead?

Although the team could possibly use some upgrades at a number of positions, including on the offensive line, receiver and on the edge, it does not necessarily mean that New England at this stage of their rebuild – year one – need to go out and make a splash play on defense.

Graff suggests that the Patriots could benefit instead from making a more low-key move prior to the season starting, rather than gambling a portion of their future away for an older, veteran player.

“A smaller move — like via the waiver wire next week — that brought in a depth linebacker, tight end or defensive tackle might make more sense. But Wolf insisted Monday that he and his staff would consider a trade for a big-name player.”

The upside is certainly there for a player like Hendrickson – but is it worth both a big-money deal and giving up a first or second rounder? It would certainly be a risky move.
