The Green Bay Packers appear to have their top two quarterbacks locked in thanks to the performances of starter Jordan Love and backup Malik Willis.
The QB3 spot, officially, is still up in the air as former fifth-round pick Sean Clifford and undrafted free agent rookie Taylor Elgersma battle it out.
Elgersma, who is one year removed from winning the Canadian equivalent of the Heisman Trophy, has put together some very impressive performances in Packers camp.
Elgersma and wide receiver Isaiah Neyor keep linking up on deep throws down the field, giving the Canadian an excuse to show off his rocket arm.
If the Packers are picking based on overall passing upside, it seems as though Elgersma might be the more talented player.
The only roadblock for Green Bay is ensuring Elgersma can adapt to the significantly higher quality of play he’ll face in the pros. One or two more preseason gems could be enough to seal the deal.
Taylor Elgersma can win Packers QB3 job in 2025
In his final season with Laurier, Elgersma threw for over 4,000 yards and 34 touchdowns while leading the Hawks to the prestigious Vanier Cup.
Elgersma became just the second U Sports (Canadian NCAA equivalent) player to ever be invited to the Senior Bowl, where he put his arm on display.
At 6-5 and 227 pounds with a gun for an arm, Elgersma is straight out of central casting for a prototypical pocket quarterback.
Unfortunately, given the level of competition he played against throughout his career, it might be hard to judge how high the ceiling truly is. More preseason time could answer those questions.
Clifford was a questionable pick to begin with after an up-and-down career at Penn State, as many critics took aim at his overall decision-making and lack of NFL-level arm talent.
Lacking Love’s deep accuracy, Willis’ mobility, and Elgersma’s arm, Clifford may soon find himself out in Green Bay.
Elgersma getting meaningful snaps for the Packers in 2025 means that something has gone horribly wrong.
However, Love’s injury shows that Green Bay needs to be prepared, and Elgersma might be better equipped to lead this team to wins than Clifford.
