“There is no bigger disappointment through this season’s first half than the Orioles, and it probably isn’t even close,” ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez wrote.
The Orioles didn’t wait long before deciding to fire former manager Brandon Hyde.
“The Baltimore Orioles fired manager Brandon Hyde on Saturday, hoping a new leader can spark a turnaround of the most disappointing team in Major League Baseball. Hyde, who had managed the Orioles through the end of their rebuild and helped lead them to the past two postseasons, oversaw an underwhelming start. The Orioles fell to 15-29,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan wrote.
With the season now almost over, the Orioles could already be eyeing potential managerial candidates. Skip Schumaker stands out as a great option, especially as a young manager.
“Schumaker only got two years in Miami, though he did lead the team to its first full-season winning record (i.e., not including the 2020 campaign) since 2009, and only its second playoff appearance since winning the World Series in 2003. He won the NL Manager of the Year award for his work in that 2023 season,” Call to the Pen’s Brandon Glick wrote. “He’s not the most experienced candidate on this list, and his second season in Miami was disastrous. However, as someone with World Series pedigree as a player and a reputation for working well with young players, he’d be a perfect fit in Baltimore.”
Schumaker would undoubtedly be an ideal candidate for the Orioles. His time with the Marlins ended after he didn’t return following a family matter. Pairing one of the most exciting young managers with one of the most exciting young teams just makes perfect sense.
