Roti and her best friend, Beefcake, had been seen running loose by concerned community members, who quickly alerted animal control. Unfortunately, the county is severely under-resourced and couldn’t respond right away. They asked that the dogs be safely contained until help could arrive.
Tragically, before that could happen, Roti was struck by a car. Beefcake remained by her side, frantically barking and running in circles, refusing to leave her. His desperate cries caught the attention of a friend of OTAT West Texas, who rushed to the scene and loaded them both into her car, getting them to the emergency vet as fast as she could.
Vet Visit
When Roti arrived at the emergency vet, she was in respiratory distress and her gums were completely pale—a sign of serious trauma. She was immediately stabilized with IV fluids and medications while the team rushed to assess the extent of her injuries through radiographs. Thankfully, there was no significant internal damage.
However, her back foot was severely mangled, and she had road rash on her other paws. To make matters worse, her hip was dislocated. Roti will need surgery to amputate at least one, possibly two, toes, repair her dislocated hip, and receive ongoing antibiotics and betadine soaks to treat the infection in her feet.
Despite everything she’s been through, the medical team reports that she is the sweetest dog they’ve ever treated in this condition.
