Jordan Love injury update: Green Bay Packers QB reveals his expected Week 1 status to media

Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love underwent surgery on his left thumb this week after sustaining a ligament injury in last Saturday’s preseason opener against the New York Jets. Love told the media Thursday the surgery took place in Los Angeles on Tuesday, and it was done to repair his ulnar collateral ligament.

Love dealt with multiple injuries last season that required him to miss time. He wanted to go into the 2025 season “100% healthy,” so he opted to get the surgery now to be ready for Week 1 against the Detroit Lions.

“I think with the time frame that we have right now, finishing up training camp and preseason and heading into the season with the choice to be going into the season 100% healthy was definitely the call I wanted to make,” Love said, via Rob Demovsky of ESPN. “Dealing with injuries last year, I wanted to go into this thing feeling good.”

Love, 26, missed Week 2 and Week 3 last season after he sprained his MCL in the regular season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles in Brazil. Later in the season, he suffered a groin injury. Even after he hurt his thumb on Saturday, he participated in Monday’s practice with his thumb taped. Had the thumb injury occurred during the season, Love said he probably wouldn’t have undergone surgery.

“If this was in the middle of the season, probably would’ve been something we didn’t get the surgery on,” Love said. “But with it still being early and I’m having time to recover and be fully ready for Week 1, the recommendation was to get the surgery.”

Jordan Love will sit out Packers’ 2nd preseason contest

Love has not thrown since the procedure. Head coach Matt LaFleur expects him to participate fully next week. Malik Willis will start under center in Saturday’s preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts.

“We’ll start integrating back in next week and kind of just playing it by ear, seeing how it feels,” Love said. “Once I get throwing and moving around, things like that, just playing it by ear, but next week we should be starting.”

Love threw for 3,389 yards, 25 touchdowns and 11 interceptions on 63.1% passing last season. Drops were an issue. Packers skill players dropped 26 of Love’s 458 passes, per Pro Football Focus.

Love’s counting stats took a step back from 2023 and his turnovers were an issue to begin the season. All of Love’s interceptions came between Weeks 1-11. In his last seven starts of the season, Love threw for nine touchdowns with no turnovers.
