Braves’ Matt Olson breaks Dale Murphy’s Atlanta record to move up historic MLB list | Sporting News

Matt Olson posts.

That verb, “posts,” has a special meaning in MLB context. It connotes a guy who shows up every day and is in the lineup and does his job. Someone who posts is someone who is Mr. Reliable.

Olson posts.

In fact, he does it better than any active player.

On Thursday night, Olson played in his 741st consecutive game.

That passed Dale Murphy (740) on the MLB all-time list. Olson now has the 13th-longest consecutive games streak in MLB history.

Cal Ripken Jr., of course, holds this record at 2,632 games, more than three times Olson’s mark. Lou Gehrig had held it for a long time, at 2,130.

The full list down to Olson, via MLB Network’s Sarah Langs:

  1. 1982-98 Cal Ripken Jr. 2,632
  2. 1925-39 Lou Gehrig: 2,130
  3. 1916-25 Everett Scott: 1,307
  4. 1975-85 Steve Garvey: 1,207
  5. 2000-07 Miguel Tejada: 1,152
  6. 1963-70 Billy Williams: 1,117
  7. 1922-30 Joe Sewell: 1,103
  8. 1952-57 Stan Musial: 895
  9. 1949-55 Eddie Yost: 829
  10. 1931-37 Gus Suhr: 822
  11. 1955-60 Nellie Fox: 798
  12. 1978-83 Pete Rose: 745
  13. 2021-pres Matt Olson: 741

Those are mostly legends of the game, but there are a few guys thrown in that you may not have heard of or remembered.

It’s an unusual board to be climbing in the modern game. Science probably says that it makes sense for every player to get a day off once in a while.

Olson, though, has played every game of the 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 (so far) seasons.

At first base, maybe his body isn’t physically beat up every night, sure. But he’s still out there doing his thing, taking pitches and hitting homers. He’s a special talent, and he’s always in the lineup.

That’s such a comfort for a manager, and frankly, it’s gotta be comfortable for Olson, too. If there’s a game, he’s playing, period, no questions asked.

It’s hard to imagine that stopping any time soon, health-willing.

There are players fans cheer for, and then there are players fans quietly lean on. Paul Goldschmidt belongs to the second group — and that’s exactly why Cardinals fans don’t always realize just how special he has been. They like him. They respect him. But maybe, just maybe, they should love him a little more while they still can.

Blue Jays Add Former Giants Reliever Tyler Rogers to Bolster Bullpen.

The San Francisco Giants have had a frugal offseason to this point, with plenty of reports and rumors that frugality will be a central theme over the next few days, weeks, and months. And now we have perhaps the most painful example of it yet, as the team did not sign the one player that everyone expected them to add this offseason: reliever Tyler Rogers.
