Fans in Disbelief Over 49ers’ $92 Million Decision

The San Francisco 49ers’ latest roster decision has fans asking some questions and reacting negatively. On Tuesday, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported that the 49ers have reached a four-year, $92 million contract extension agreement with cornerback Deommodore Lenoir. The 25-year-old, who was taken in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Niners, was in the final year of his rookie contract and was set to become a free agent in the offseason prior to the deal.

Sure enough, keeping Lenoir was a no-brainer since he has been one of the standout defensive players for the 49ers. Through Week 10, the Oregon Ducks product has recorded 53 tackles, two interceptions, six passes defended and one forced fumble. Lenoir is actually tied with Fred Warner for the most passes defended and interceptions on the Niners, while his tackles are the second-most on the team. — Jeremy Fowler (@JFowlerESPN) November 12, 2024 Despite Lenoir’s production and having exceeded expectations, several fans couldn’t help but point out how the 49ers may have overpaid to keep him. “HOLY OVERPAY!!!” a commenter shared. Another one said, “Seems like a massive overpay? Wasn’t he just like…fine???”

“Could have signed him 5 for $60 million easily,” a critic added. “Jesus Christ. [Expletive]. Overpay,” an angry follower added. A fifth critic wrote on NFL’s post about the deal, “Whoa! Definitely overpaid. Bummer.” “WHAT!!! EXCESSIVE MUCH?? Don’t get me wrong….. I’m all for the players getting paid, but this one seems a little out there!! a poster said in disbelief.

For what it’s worth, several other fans praised the 49ers’ decision, with many noting that they did well locking up a rising defensive star like Deommodore Lenoir early before he hits free agency and gains more leverage. Many supporters also pointed out that it’s a well-deserved pay raise for Lenoir, who has been a consistent contributor for the team over the past couple of years. It’s worth noting that Lenoir tallied 84 tackles, 10 passes defended and three interceptions in 2023.

There’s no doubt that Lenoir is an incredible talent, as he was also considered as one of the top free agents in 2025 prior to his deal. However, only time will tell if the 49ers actually overpaid for him or not.
