Michael Harris and offense explode as Braves survive Mets in victory

The Atlanta Braves took on the Mets in a matchup that clearly looked in the Mets’ favor based on the pitching matchup. The Braves deployed Carlos Carrasco, who is at the end of his career vs David Peterson who is in the prime of his.

Jurickson Profar looked to get things started when he led off the game with a single, but then David Peterson did what he does best and forced three straight ground outs. Carlos Carrasco did not have the same fortune. Lindor led off with a double and then Soto and Nimmo drew back-to-back walks to load the bases with zero outs. Alonso then singled to make the score 0-2. After a mound visit Carrasco was able to strike out McNeil but then walked Marte to load the bases again. Cedric Mullins then hit a line drive to Eli White who made a throw home. In a bang bang play at home the call was challenged by the Braves, but ultimately the call was upheld and Nimmo scored from third making the score 0-3 Mets. The inning finally ended when Alvarez struck out.

In the second it was uneventful for the Braves as they had zero base runners. That was not the case for the Mets who continued their onslaught of Carrasco. Baty grounded out, but then Lindor singled followed by Soto’s twenty-ninth HR of the season to make the score 0-5. Nimmo then doubled. Alonso doubled but then McNeil doubled to make the scored 0-6. The damage was eventually stalled by Marte grounding out.

In the third it looked like the Braves may create some havoc for the Mets. After Nacho Alvarez struck out Nick Allen had a single followed by a Profar having a single of his own and moving Allen to third. After Profar then stole second base on a Matt Olson strikeout, Ozuna walked to load the bases. Nothing came of it though as cleanup hitter Ozzie Albies grounded out.

Aaron Bummer came in to replace Carrasco in the top of the third and was able to sit down all but three hitters. Brett Baty was able to muster a single. The Braves looked good in the fourth inning. Murphy led off the inning with a walk, followed by a single from Harris. White struck out, bit it was okay as Alvarez walked to load the bases. Nick Allen then walked to make the score 1-6. After a mound visit Profar cleared the based on a double to make the score 4-6. Matt Olson then walked. This led to a pitching change where Reed Garrett came in. Marcell Ozuna wasted no time and singled to bring the score within one run to make the score 5-6. Ozzie Albies struck out looking, but then Sean Murphy walked to load the bases. This set up an epic grand slam by the red hot hot Michael Harris on a cutter right down the middle.

The ball just barely made it out of dead center to make the the score 9-6 in the Braves’ favor, reminiscent of the historic offense of the 2023 team. Eli White struck out to end the inning, but the damage had been done. The Braves scored nine runs in a single inning.

Aaron Bummer stayed in the game to pitch the fourth and was able to strike out Juan Soto and then Nimmo to ground out before he entered trouble territory. He hit Alonso with a pitch and then walked McNeil. Marte then singled but then Eli White showed off his defensive skills and threw out Alonso at the plate to end the inning.

Paul Blackburn, who has been a starter for most of his career, came in the game as a reliever. He easily retired the side with three line outs. Aaron Bummer stayed in to pitch the fifth and struck out Mullins but then was replaced by trade deadline acquisition Tyler Kinley. Kinley got Alvarez to ground out, but then gave up a single to Baty. After a walk to Lindor on nine pitches, Kinley was able to strike out superstar Juan Soto to end the inning.

After a nine pitch battle himself, Matt Olson drew a much deserved walked. Marcell Ozuna wasted no time and blasted a two run shot over the left field wall to make the score 11-6 for his twentieth HR on the year. That now makes it is fourth straight season with twenty HRs and his ninth career season. It also makes it eleven unanswered runs for the Braves.

Albies, Murphy, and Harris all grounded out to end the top of the sixth inning, but some insurance had been added.

Dylan Lee came in to pitch the sixth. He was able to get Nimmo to ground out. He gave up a single to franchise HR leader Alonso, but made up for it when McNeil grounded into a double play to end the inning. In the seventh the Braves were finally slowed down as the minimum number of hitters came to the plate. Lee stayed in the game to pitch the seventh. Marte singled to lead off the inning, but then Lee was able to strike out both Mullins and Alvarez. The decision was then made to bring in Pierce Johnson to relieve Lee. This seemingly was the correct strategy as Baty then popped up to end the inning.

Blackburn stayed in the game for the Mets in the eighth and got the job done. He sat down the top of the order in one-two-three fashion. Johnson stayed in the game and did not have as good of fortune. He was also facing the top of the order and gave up a leadoff walk to Lindor. There was no harm done though as he was able to strike out Juan Soto and then get Nimmo to ground into a double play.

Blackburn again stayed in the game and got the job done in the ninth inning with a one-two-three inning facing Albies, Murphy, and Harris. Raisel Iglesias came in to pitch the ninth and got the job done. He gave up a single to red hot Alonso, but retired the next three hitters to deliver a victory for the Braves.

Michael Harris remained hot with four hits two hits to include a grand slam and Marcell Ozuna locked in his fourth straight twenty HR season and ninth of his career in the Braves’ victory over the Mets after scoring eleven unanswered runs when being down 0-6 at one point.
