Red Sox predicted to sign $6 million All-Star, Silver Slugger first baseman through waivers to replace Abraham Toro

Red Sox predicted to sign $6 million All-Star, Silver Slugger first baseman through waivers to replace Abraham Toro originally appeared on The Sporting News

The Boston Red Sox have been needing help at first base for this entire season after their main star, Triston Casas, went down for the season with a patellar tendon rupture. Abraham Toro has been holding it down, but he’s been slumping, and they need an upgrade.

While the deadline has passed, waivers still remain. And Fansided’s Zachary Rotman believes if former All-Star and Silver Slugger Josh Bell of the Washington Nationals gets waived, the Sox need to snatch him.

“The 32-year-old got off to a brutal start and struggled through the first three months of the season, but since the start of July, he’s slashed .333/.445/.525 in 30 games. Bell’s 176 WRC+ is good for eighth in the majors in that span, and leads all Red Sox players…when he’s going well at the plate, he’s a legitimate threat, which is something this Red Sox team desperately needs. He’s a major upgrade over Toro, and wouldn’t cost the Red Sox anything other than money down the stretch,” Rotman wrote.

Comparing Bell to Toro since July 1st makes this acquisition a no-brainer if possible. As Rotman said, Bell has been hitting .333/.445/.525 in 30 games with four home runs. As for Toro, he’s been much worse, slashing .200/.259/.295/.554 with only two home runs.

This only works however if the Nationals decide to waive Bell. Although, Rotman did point out that teams out of contention tend to waive veterans to clear their books and let their young players get some time on the field and in the box.

With the Nationals being firmly out of contention with a record of 47-72, getting Bell may not be as hard as people think.
