METS TRADE: Mets Predicted to Sign $162M Two-Time All-Star to Play New Position

The New York Mets reportedly have their offseason priorities set. President of baseball operations David Stearns is most focused on starting pitcher Corbin Burnes and outfielder Juan Soto. But is there a scenario where Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman makes his way to Queens?

Bregman’s .768 OPS in 2024 was the lowest single-season mark of his career. However, that number is deceiving because he fought through a slow start to get his year back on track. He still finished with 26 home runs, 75 RBI and 79 runs scored through 634 plate appearances, which isn’t far off his recent production.

The Scott Boras client is looking to cash in this winter. A reunion with the Astros makes a lot of sense and seems like the most likely outcome. But Bregman is remaining open-minded about his future, which will allow his market to be bigger than initially expected.

Bregman is willing to play second base if the right opportunity presents itself, Boras shared at the GM Meetings. If Mark Vientos doesn’t change positions, he’s in control of the hot corner for the Mets. So, this makes the two-time All-Star and intriguing fit for their roster.

Five USA Today MLB editors and writers shared predictions for this winter’s top free agents. The group was mostly split on Bregman’s future, with the Astros getting the most overall votes (two). However, Jesse Yomtov thinks he’ll land with the Mets.

Matt Chapman’s six-year, $151 million extension with the San Francisco Giants will likely act as a starting point in contract negotiations for Bregman. CBS Sports’ R.J. Anderson is predicting he’ll sign a six-year, $162 million deal.
