Chiefs Coach Makes Public Plea to Keep Cut Candidate on Team

The biggest question mark on the Kansas City Chiefs’ current roster is how the franchise will fill out the depth chart at the receiver position. While the top pass catchers remain clear, the bottom of the depth chart remains in flux. There are at least five players fighting for two roster spots, with no indication as to how things are going to play out. Each week brings a new report or standout that appears to tip the scales.

You can count special teams coordinator Dave Toub among those pulling for Nikko Remigio to earn one of the final two spots. The receiver was an early favorite due to his ability to play in multiple roles. However, that has since changed with a number of surprise standouts working their way past Remigio. Still, the Chiefs’ coach believes the depth piece should unquestionably make the final roster.

With this in mind, Toub’s quote isn’t going to come as a surprise with the special teams coordinator defending his player. Offering the following sentiment when talking about the race.

“Everybody knows how I feel about Nikko. I love having a guy that you can depend on. He’s solid and he’s not going to cost you a game. That’s important, so important.”

Dave Toub

The quote speaks for itself, with Toub making it clear the receiver contributes to winning, and more importantly, isn’t going to cost the Chiefs a game. What the decision-makers must weigh when making final roster decisions is a limited ceiling vs. the unknown. The pieces Remigio is competing against offer more possible upside for the offense.

With Hollywood Brown consistently dealing with camp injuries and Rashee Rice facing an uncertain future, it makes a level of sense to chase players who might become surprise offensive contributors. The obvious counter to this is Toub’s point that Remigio can contribute to winning by doing the dirty work and being a reliable depth option.

All adding up to the Chiefs having an incredibly difficult decision to make in the preseason’s final two weeks. Remigio has continually fallen further back in this race, but at least one KC coach has the pass catcher’s back as the franchise continues to watch the surprisingly heated battle.
