According to Newy Scruggs of NBC5, Dallas is signing Will Grier, who was released from the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday, per Pro Football Talk’s Charean Williams. Grier spent the 2021-22 season with the Cowboys.
Grier was a third-round pick by the Carolina Panthers out of West Virginia in 2019 but has seen very little action in his NFL career. His only appearances came in 2019 when he played two games and completed 28 of his 52 passes for 228 yards and four interceptions.
After his stint with Carolina, he was claimed off waivers by the Cowboys ahead of the 2021 season and became Dallas’ third-string quarterback. He did not play at all in his first season in Dallas and landed on the practice squad in 2022.
When the Cowboys picked up Trey Lance ahead of the 2023 season, they cut Grier and he joined the Cincinnati Bengals’ practice squad.
He was signed to the New England Patriots practice squad later that year before finishing out the season with the Los Angeles Chargers’ practice squad.
After a short stint with the Eagles to start the year, Grier is now back in Dallas.
With Prescott out, the Cowboys looked to Cooper Rush under center on Sunday against the Eagles. Rush completed 13 of his 23 passes for just 45 yards while losing two fumbles in the 34-6 loss.
Dallas also has Lance, the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft, on its roster. Lance played briefly in Sunday’s loss, throwing for 21 yards and an interception on 4-of-6 passing.
It’s unlikely the Cowboys will have to look to Grier at any point this season, but it’s not a bad idea to bring in another quarterback after one goes down just for the sake of depth.
