Breaking: Braves claim well-traveled reliever off of waivers as roster shuffle continues

For a team that is effectively out of the playoff race, the Atlanta Braves are sure staying busy. They just claimed Vidal Brujan off of waivers on Friday for some bench depth and they continue to shuffle arms to and from the minor leagues in order to try to find some configuration that works. Atlanta isn’t stopping there as they just added an intriguing new bullpen arm to the mix.

The bullpen remains a problem with the Braves’ roster, although there have been some improvements lately. Tyler Kinley seems to be a quality addition to the bullpen and Atlanta has gotten rid of Rafael Montero and Enyel De Los Santos recently which has removed at least some of the volatility in the later innings.

Now, it looks like the Braves are going fully into experimental mode in their search for relief options they can trust. In that spirit, the Braves just claimed Connor Seabold off of waivers from the Rays.

Braves claim journeyman reliever Connor Seabold in latest attempt to find a workable bullpen

Seabold was originally the Phillies’ third round pick back in 2017 and he has since bounced around with the Red Sox and Rockies, played last year over in South Korea, and caught back on with Tampa before they designated him for assignment a couple days ago.

In Seabold, the Braves are getting a bit of a reclamation project. He was good over in Korea in 2024, but his results in the minors this year have been less than encouraging. Atlanta isn’t giving up much to acquire him as giving up Domingo Gonzalez’s 40-man spot is a nothing burger and if it works out, they get a useful reliever that can throw multiple innings or even give Atlanta a spot starter for basically free.

We’ll see if Seabold factors much into the Braves’ plans for the rest of the season. This is certainly the time to do a little bit of experimentation and it looks like the front office is taking advantage of this time while the Braves plays out the rest of the string in 2025.
