The NFL preseason is underway, and the New England Patriots looked promising against the Washington Commanders, winning the game 48-18. Multiple young players showed promise, such as running backs TreVeyon Henderson and Lan Larison. Both running backs added a touchdown with Henderson returning the opening kickoff 100 yards and Larison scoring on a 2-yard run late in the 4th.
With these promising performances and veterans Rhamondre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson still around, we could be seeing the end of JaMycal Hasty’s time in New England.
JaMycal Hasty’s Time With the Patriots May Come to an End Soon
The six-year veteran running back has spent his career with both the San Francisco 49ers and Jacksonville Jaguars, before being claimed off of waivers by the Patriots in 2023. This past season, Hasty appeared in 15 games, though that came with limited minutes, with only 20 carries, 10 catches, and 10 kick returns on the year. Although the sample size was small, Hasty was effective in the return game, accumulating 238 yards on those 10 returns.
Hasty played four years at Baylor before entering the NFL. During his time at Baylor, he played in a total of 45 games, accumulating 1,998 yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground. Through the air, Hasty caught 79 passes for 485 yards and one touchdown. Hasty would declare for the 2020 NFL draft, where he’d go undrafted.
While Hasty could provide value as a veteran running back, the Pats are not going to move either Stevenson or Gibson to keep him. They also have Henderson and Larison, who’ve shown promising flashes, with Henderson looking to have a significant role in the Patriots’ offense this season due to his receiving prowess and big-play ability.
When it comes to Hasty, if you can’t find a role where he’d be able to see the field, the Patriots could look to use his spot on the roster to keep someone else on the team. The Patriots’ next preseason game will be on the road against the Minnesota Vikings on August 16th at 1 PM, where Hasty and others on the roster bubble will try to make their case to stick around.
