P.J. Locke #6 and Kris Abrams-Draine #31 of the Denver Broncos break up a pass intended for Quentin Johnston #1 of the Los Angeles Chargers.
With less than four weeks before the first Buffalo Bills regular season game, the team has some roster decisions to figure out. One area Buffalo will need to take a long look at is the wide receiver.
Last Friday, during the Blue and Red practice at Highmark Stadium, receiver Khalil Shakir left with a high ankle sprain. Shakir will be week to week, but the hope is he will be back for the first game.
The Bills Added WRs This Offseason
Buffalo added three wide receivers in free agency: Josh Palmer, Elijah Moore, and Laviska Shenault. The Bills already had Shakir, Keon Coleman, and Curtis Samuel on the roster. On top of all, Buffalo drafted receiver Kaden Prather in the seventh round.
There are a handful of receivers fighting for limited spots, and they could add another one to the roster. This week, the Los Angeles Chargers brought back receiver Keenan Allen. Allen played 11 years for the Chargers before being traded to the Chicago Bears last year. This is the second receiver the Chargers have brought back this offseason, with Mike Williams coming back this spring. Just like Allen, Williams was not part of the 2024 Chargers but headed back for 2025. However, Williams decided to retire before training camp, leaving a roster spot open. If Williams hadn’t retired, Allen probably wouldn’t have been back in Los Angeles.
With Allen back with the Chargers, he will be taking snaps and targets away from receivers. Last year, rookie receiver Ladd McConkey was amazing and will be awesome again this season. 2023 first-round pick Quentin Johnston could be getting snaps taken away or even looking for a new home.
Johnston was drafted No. 21 overall out of TCU, and his first NFL season wasn’t great. He only recorded 431 receiving yards and two scores in 17 games. In his second year, he turned it around, recording 711 receiving yards and eight touchdowns.
Bills Urged To Trade For Johnston
The Chargers won’t like be parting ways with Johnston, but if they do, Travis Wakeman from The Sporting News thinks the Bills would be a good fit. Wakeman has the Chargers trading Johnston to Buffalo for a 2026 third-round pick.
Chargers receive: 2026 third-round pick
Bills receive: WR Quentin Johnston
“The Bills are inside a Super Bowl or bust window and could use another target for Josh Allen to get the ball to, especially a big target that can go up and win jump balls,” Wakeman wrote. The Bills have second-year player Keon Coleman and former Chargers receiver Joshua Palmer, but Khalil Shakir has already been banged up this summer. Buffalo could be willing to pay as much as a third-round pick for Johnston, who is still just 23 years old, to make sure they have enough firepower for Josh Allen as they pursue a trip to Santa Clara in February.”
Johnston still has tons of upside in his game, and getting with a quarterback like Josh Allen could turn his career around. Allen likes to fire the ball down the field, and Johnston could use his 6-foot-4 frame to gain advantage over the defender.
