Selena Gomez has reflected on the beginnings of her friendship with Taylor Swift, sharing how the two first connected as teenagers after dating different members of the Jonas Brothers.
Speaking on Jake Shane’s Therapuss podcast, Gomez recalled being 15 when she dated Nick Jonas, while Swift, then 18, was in a relationship with Joe Jonas.
Though both relationships were brief, Gomez said the experience led to a lasting bond. “We like to say the best thing we got out of those relationships was each other,” she explained, adding that the two became close during that period and have remained in each other’s lives ever since.
Gomez also described one of her earliest memories with Swift: hearing “Love Story” before it was released in 2008. Swift played the track for her in a hotel room, telling her it might become the first single from her upcoming album.
“I remember thinking it was one of the most beautiful songs I’d ever heard,” Gomez said. “She is a chameleon, she’s incredible!”
Sixteen years on, the pair continue to support one another’s careers.
Earlier this year, Swift praised Gomez’s collaborative album with Benny Blanco, I Said I Love You First, while Gomez congratulated Swift on reclaiming her masters.
Just weeks before the podcast appearance, Swift sent Gomez a homemade sourdough loaf, a nod to “Love Story” and her relationship with Blanco, complete with a note that read “loaf story.”
