Exclusive: Xavier McKinney Reveals Why He Chose Packers In Free Agency

The Green Bay Packers pulled off one of free agency’s biggest coups last year by landing safety Xavier McKinney with a four-year, $67 million contract.

The investment has paid immediate dividends as McKinney transformed into the defensive backbone Green Bay desperately needed.

McKinney recently reflected on his decision to join the Packers, calling it an easy choice when speaking with CBS’ Pete Prisco.

“This was like the best, and obviously, like, to me, it was the obvious choice. Just because I knew that it would help me get back to solely locking in on my craft and what I do for my job. The atmosphere is the best that I’ve ever been around,” McKinney said.

His first season in Green Bay validated that confidence. McKinney finished second league-wide with eight interceptions and earned first-team All-Pro recognition.

The numbers tell only part of his impact story.

McKinney quickly became the vocal leader of Green Bay’s secondary. He functions as the defensive quarterback, coaching younger safeties and setting the unit’s tone.

Defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley has praised him as “a remarkable football player” who elevates teammates around him.

A calf injury has kept McKinney off the field during training camp and preseason games. He remains optimistic about returning for the regular season opener against the Detroit Lions.

McKinney’s choice wasn’t solely about Green Bay’s culture. The opportunity to join a talented defensive group factored heavily into his decision.

The Packers needed a proven leader in their secondary, and McKinney needed the right environment to showcase his abilities.

As Green Bay prepares for another playoff push, McKinney’s combination of playmaking ability and leadership continues proving essential.

His focus stays on reaching full health while guiding the defense from the sideline. The Packers got exactly what they paid for in their marquee free agent signing.
