The New York Yankees entered Thursday 26-32 since the start of June. They were once in a position to run away with the American League East, but have since struggled immensely.
It’s difficult to point to one area and blame it for the Yankees’ woes. Their bullpen, offense, starting rotation, and defense have all been inconsistent. However, their collapse has led to conversations about Brian Cashman’s job security.
Cashman has been the Yankees’ general manager since 1998, and his current contract runs through next season. MLB insider Jon Heyman revealed that the Yankees will not be firing Cashman, despite the Yankees’ sudden woes.
“Boone and Cashman aren’t going anywhere,” Heyman said in a livestream for Bleacher Report. “Hal Steinbrenner, for whatever reason, has become the opposite of his father. I don’t know if it’s a reaction to his father and all of the bad publicity, or maybe he’s just a very nice guy and doesn’t want to fire anybody.”
Cashman has had great success since he took over in his role for the Yankees. The team has made the postseason in 22 of its 27 seasons under Cashman, and is still a contender to make it back this year.
Cashman did make aggressive moves at this year’s trade deadline to try to get the Yankees back on track. He acquired Ryan McMahon, Camilo Doval, David Bednar and Jake Bird, among others. However, the Yankees have just one win in August, and if things do not change fast, more and more conversations about Cashman’s future will happen.
Regardless of outside discourse, Heyman notes that the Yankees are not planning to make any drastic changes regarding Cashman or Boone.
