The Green Bay Packers’ offense has flourished under head coach Matt LaFleur. Basic stats back it up. Under his leadership, the Packers’ offense has yet to finish outside of the top half of the NFL as a scoring unit.

There’s been steady improvement with the transition from Aaron Rodgers to Jordan Love, too. In 2023, the Packers improved to the No. 12 scoring offense and finished 11th in yards. Last year, those rankings bumped up to the No. 8 scoring offense and fifth-best in yards.

It’s a delicate process, from crafting the scheme to executing the playcalls, to fielding one of the best offenses in the NFL. The best of the best always seem to excel at the finer details, such as executing the scripted game plan to open a game or a half.

Matt LaFleur’s scripted game plans keeps Packers ahead of the curve

The Packers excel there, too. According to Pro Football Focus, LaFleur’s offense is one of the best in the NFL at executing its scripted plays, ranking as the ninth-most efficient offense in scripted situations. A big reason for the success was the Packers’ ability to move the ball on the ground in these situations.

According to PFF, Green Bay ran the ball more than any other team during a scripted series, topping the league with a 54.2 percent rushing rate. Thanks to Josh Jacobs, who led the league in rushing under these circumstances, it worked.

The Packers had the second-most explosive rushing plays in scripted situations in the league.

The success in the rushing game allowed Love to find success with RPOs, which were another staple of LaFleur’s scripted playcalling. Green Bay was eighth in the league in utilizing RPOs during scripted drives.

LaFleur’s approach in 2024 was simplified, in part because of the early-season injuries sustained by Love, but also just because it was effective. After such an impressive first season with Jacobs in the backfield, the Packers likely won’t look to fix what isn’t broken when opening up a critical series with a handful of plays already listed and ready to go.

Still, with the growth and additions in a young receiver room and heightened expectations for Love under center, the Packers could reasonably be more balanced in this regard. After all, Love was sharp on those RPO passes, completing 66.7 percent of his passes there with three scores and no turnovers.

He was also wildly efficient on second down, often following those successful first-down runs.

On second down plays with nine or fewer yards to gain, Love completed 75 percent of his passes for 908 yards and 11 touchdowns to just two interceptions.

The growth in maturity and experience of Green Bay’s offense only makes it more dangerous from a talent standpoint.

But the fact that LaFleur’s system is being executed so efficiently already is enough to draw attention to what lies in store for a promising 2025 season ahead.
