SF Giants injury update: Pair of sorely missed pitchers both making progress

The SF Giants pitching staff is in need of some help right now. After selling off pieces at the trade deadline, the team could sorely use reliever Erik Miller and starting pitcher Landen Roupp, both of whom are progressing nicely from their elbow injuries.

According to Justice delos Santos of the Mercury News on social media, Miller threw a live BP session yesterday and Roupp is scheduled to throw one today:

SF Giants get positive health update on two key pitchers

This is a most welcome development given the state of the team’s pitching staff. The Giants have had to scramble to fill their rotation after Roupp’s injury, turning to Carson Whisenhunt and Kai-Wei Teng. While Whisenhunt is making a legitimate case to remain in the rotation for the rest of the year, Roupp will probably take Teng’s spot.

Prior to his injury, Roupp was red-hot. He has had a very solid season with a 3.11 ERA in 20 starts. He was proving himself to be a worthy third option in the rotation behind Logan Webb and Robbie Ray, so his injury came at a bad time. Thankfully, his injury does not seem to be serious so the hope is he can return to the rotation soon.

With Miller, his return will greatly benefit a depleted bullpen after the Giants traded away both Tyler Rogers and Camilo Doval ahead of the trade deadline.

Miller was having a phenomenal year before he got hurt. He had a 1.50 ERA in 36 appearances before he went on the IL and was certainly manager Bob Melvin’s most trusted left-handed option in the bullpen.

With the bullpen pecking order having to be slightly altered, Miller could become an eighth inning guy for the Giants upon his return. Him and Ryan Walker could serve as a bridge to closer Randy Rodríguez in the ninth inning.

While the playoffs still seem mostly like a pipe dream for this club, if they are to have any semblance of hope at October baseball they will need Roupp and Miller to return and be just as strong as they were prior to their IL stints.

Thankfully, they are throwing BP sessions and appear to be on track to return soon which is a great sign for the club.
