The New York Yankees have lost four straight games and are in danger of fading out of playoff contention.
They made additions at the trade deadline, but they haven’t paid off yet. On Monday night, the team blew a ninth-inning lead against the Texas Rangers and was walked off in the 10th inning.
Devin Williams allowed a game-tying home run with one out, and Jake Bird gave up a three-run home run to Josh Jung to end the game. The Yankees’ sloppy play and Aaron Boone’s refusal to make some key changes have many questioning his job security. Son of former Yankees All-Star Gary Sheffield, Gary Sheffield Jr., is among those calling for Boone to be fired.
“ALL ABOARD! #FireBoone,” Sheffield Jr. wrote on X, replying to a post talking about moving on from Boone.
Sheffield played three seasons with the Yankees. He was a two-time All-Star, two-time Silver Slugger and two-time MVP Award candidate in those three years. He was the MVP runner-up in 2004, his first season with the team. Overall, he was a nine-time All-Star, five-time Silver Slugger, batting champion and World Series champion.
Earlier this year, the Yankees agreed to a two-year extension with Boone. His current deal keeps him under contract through 2027. However, the Yankees’ collapse this season could force the team’s hand.
Sheffield Jr. is currently the host of the “Yankees Unloaded” podcast on YouTube. The Yankees are currently holding on to a wild-card spot and have fallen to third place in the division. If things do not change fast, more people will start calling for Boone to be fired.
