Chiefs Defender Officially on Trade Block Entering August

The Kansas City Chiefs have few pieces expected to be in trade considerations over the next weeks of the preseason. Trades at this time of year are difficult with roster spots already up for grabs and teams attempting to evaluate their depth. Still, a handful of failing young players or key veterans will be moved in the next weeks.

With free agency down to the bottom of the barrel, contenders looking to put a finishing touch on the roster will need to turn to the trade market or roster cuts. If the Chiefs are going to make a move in the next weeks, one obvious name stands out.

Felix Anudike-Uzomah was drafted in the first round two seasons ago as a potential pass-rushing answer. After two years, the defender has managed 3.0 career sacks and 2 forced fumbles. It is enough life to show promise, but not the contributor the defensive line could use. With this in mind, if the Chiefs get the opportunity to upgrade pass-rushing depth, the third-year player could be a potential trade option. It has been one of the rare misses from the Kansas City front office.

The Chiefs Should Consider Trading Struggling Young Defender

A large part of what has kept the Chiefs consistently on top is the ability to find bargain fits in the draft and free agency. It is hard to be frustrated with Anudike-Uzomah’s lack of consistent production with all the hits Kansas City has had in recent seasons. Still, it makes sense to consider giving the pass rusher a fresh start and looking to upgrade. The Chiefs are in the middle of one of the greatest dynasties in league history.

You cannot afford to sit content, not searching for every possible upgrade. This means shopping the underwhelming defender who has done just enough to have a bit of trade value and leave hope that improvement is ahead. Kansas City so often has relied on Chris Jones or George Karlaftis when the defensive line has needed a play the most. This has worked and left no reason to question what the defense is capable of.

However, the argument remains simple that the young pass rusher isn’t living up to his draft spot. He is currently the fourth option off the edge and a clear weak spot that the team could easily improve. Whether this is a demotion or trading him to a new landing spot, Kansas City must consider making a change.
