Home MLB Jed Hoyer Breaks Silence After Cubs Cut Ties With Offseason Trade Prize

Jed Hoyer Breaks Silence After Cubs Cut Ties With Offseason Trade Prize

MLB MrThanh · August 2, 2025 · Comments off

The Chicago Cubs acquired Andrew Kittredge, Michael Soroka and Taylor Rogers before Thursday’s trade deadline.

After acquiring Rogers from the Pittsburgh Pirates, the team announced that it was designating Ryan Pressly for assignment in a corresponding move. The Cubs gave up outfielder Ivan Brethowr in exchange for Rogers and cash.

Pressly was supposed to be the star closer for Craig Counsell this season. However, things clearly did not go as planned. The Cubs acquired Pressly from the Houston Astros for Juan Bello. Pressly waived his no-trade clause to join the Cubs and be a closer.

Pressly was a two-time All-Star with the Astros, but was removed from the closer’s role after the team added Josh Hader. Pressly had 102 saves from 2020 to 2023. This season, he was removed from the closer’s role, and his recent DFA ends what has been a disappointing tenure.

Cubs president of baseball operations, Jed Hoyer, spoke on the team’s moves at the deadline, including cutting ties with Pressly to add Rogers.

“We felt like we could make an upgrade there,” Jed Hoyer told The Athletic’s Patrick Mooney. “Our biggest focus is just making sure our roster of 26 guys is as deep as it can be.”

Pressly had a 4.35 ERA and had blown two saves in his short stint as the team’s closer. Rogers has a 2.45 ERA in 40 games this season. He, Soroka and Kittredge figure to help the Cubs bullpen as they look to win the National League Central.
