Former Chiefs Deep-Threat WR Lands Audition with New Team During Camp

The Kansas City Chiefs got dealt some tough injury news in their wide receiving corps coming out of practice Tuesday. Marquise “Hollywood” Brown injured his ankle, and Xavier Worthy suffered a concussion. Both players sat out of Wednesday’s practice and have no timetable to return as of yet. Even so, Kansas City’s receiving corps remains full of potential heading into the season.

That said, one former Chiefs receiver recently was invited to work out for one of Kansas City’s biggest NFC rivals. According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston, the San Francisco 49ers hosted multiple players, including former Chiefs receiver Cornell Powell, for a workout.

Former Chiefs Receiver Cornell Powell Invited to 49ers Workout

Most Chiefs fans likely don’t remember Powell’s tenure in Kansas City. The 27-year-old was a fifth-round pick of the Chiefs in 2021 and was mainly on the practice squad. Though he was on the active roster for three games in 2022, he didn’t record a single catch.

Despite not contributing in the regular season, Powell did make some plays in preseason games. One of his more notable plays was a 63-yard touchdown in a 2024 preseason game.

While Powell does have two Super Bowl rings from his time in Kansas City, the Chiefs cut ties with him during the 2024 season. Following his departure from Kansas City, Powell signed with the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad. Unfortunately, after the season ended, the Seahawks also moved on from Powell.

The 27-year-old ended up playing in the United Football League in 2025 as part of the D.C. Defenders. With the Defenders, Powell recorded 29 receptions for 418 yards and seven touchdowns. That means he averaged 14.4 yards per reception, which is impressive for a player who doesn’t have blazing speed, as he only ran a 4.53-second 40-yard dash.

Powell’s chances of the 49ers bringing him in for training camp are slim, especially after they cut a receiver earlier in the week who they had signed last Friday. Nevertheless, if Powell does land in San Francisco, Chiefs Kingdom will be laughing at their NFC rival.
