Hollywood producers might not even be able to concoct such a dramatic storyline. The two-time defending champion Kansas City Chiefs, led by the NFL’s most popular player and another star that is dating a global icon, escape defeat yet again to remain undefeated and set up a showdown against their biggest threat – but at team that continues to fall short of a Super Bowl title, thereby torturing its fan base in profound ways. The 9-0 Chiefs visit the 8-2 Buffalo Bills this Sunday for an eighth meeting since 2020. Kansas City has prevailed when it matters most, winning all three postseason showdowns. Buffalo has won three of the four regular season matchups.
The Chiefs opened as slight one-point road favorites but are now two-point or 2.5-point underdogs, depending on the sportsbook. That’s because Buffalo has received most of the early betting action, which means that respected and professional bettors have backed the Bills. They are the bettors who influence the market. The public often waits until game day to place their wagers. This high-profile showdown comes after KC survived in the final seconds by blocking a Denver Broncos 35-yard field goal. The Chiefs prevailed 16-14 but failed to cover as 8.5-point favorites. Kansas City is only 4-5 against the point spread this year. Of Kansas City’s nine wins, seven have come by one possession.
“One thing about Kansas City is that it’s not like they cover. They just win games,” professional bettor Erin Rynning told Only Players, sharing that he will not be betting this game. “When they’re favored by a touchdown or so, it’s hard to lay a lot of points. But when they’re an underdog, it’s really hard to bet against them.” Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs are 12-1-1 ATS in the underdog role. That includes a 11-3 mark outright. That is truly remarkable, considering the league average is about 30% straight up when not favored.
“Last year the Bills hosted the Chiefs after talking smack, and they lost,” professional bettor Scott Pritchard told Only Players. “You can’t go against Mahomes and Andy Reid. Reid is the best in-game X’s and O’s coach ever.”
Pritchard likes KC to prevail but does not need to place a wager, given he is already invested in a KC win. He stands to win $100K if the Chiefs finish the regular season unblemished at 17-0. That comes from a $2,000 wager at 50-to-1 odds on Oct. 16 before Week 7.
