It would seem that Cedric Mullins is in his final days of being a member of the Baltimore Orioles’ organization, with the expectation that the veteran outfielder will be moved ahead of the MLB trade deadline on Thursday.
Mullins is one of several rental players the Orioles have to offer to contending teams, and it would seem a move to the National League could be what’s next for the veteran outfielder.
ESPN’s Jesse Rogers reports that the Mets have expressed an interest in Mullins ahead of the deadline.
The Mets are also believed to have an interest in Chicago White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr. Thanks to Andy Martino of SNY, we have a clue at who the Mets are willing to offer the Orioles in exchange for Mullins.
“Teams have asked about Vientos, Brett Baty, and Ronny Mauricio. The Mets are not actively trying to rid themselves of any of those young infielders — but given Baty’s recent production and newfound versatility, rival execs have come away with the sense that Vientos is more available than the others.”
Orioles bracing for Cedric Mullins trade push from Mets
A season removed from hitting 27 home runs and posting a 133 wRC+, 2025 has been a struggle for Vientos. Through 279 plate appearances this season, Vientos is slashing .226/.280/.358 with 6 home runs and an 81 wRC+.
Playing mostly as a third baseman during his time with the Mets, a position change would likely be needed if Vientos were to join the Orioles. With Ryan O’Hearn also expected to be moved at the deadline, the Orioles, in theory, could move Vientos to first base if they were to acquire him.
A player like Vientos is likely the best-case scenario for the Orioles in a trade of Mullins. After a hot start to the season, Mullins is hitting under .200 with a 61 wRC+ in 223 plate appearances since May 1. That trend is going to limit Mullins’ trade value, so a move with the Mets feels like replacing one player in need of a change-of-scenery with another.
