The Dallas Cowboys officially opened their 2025 training camp on Monday before following it up with their first practices one day later.
Tuesday’s sessions marked head coach Brian Schottenheimer and the Cowboys coaching staff’s first real look at the 90-man unit following a busy offseason, and it likely won’t be long until 53-man roster spots start being snagged, one by one.
One position battle that Dallas fans are anticipating is the one taking place under center. With Dak Prescott being the de facto QB1 each season, returning veteran Will Grier and offseason acquisition Joe Milton III are left competing for the Cowboys’ backup quarterback job, leaving fans to wonder who’ll emerge victorious.
Grier has more experience with the organization; however, Milton is the shiny new toy who demonstrated plenty of potential before the New England Patriots traded him.
Despite the lack of familiarity in Dallas, it looks like the 25-year-old QB is about to leave Grier in the dust.
Cowboys QB Will Grier Already Taking Backseat to Joe Milton III in Cowboys Training Camp
Cowboys staff writer Nick Eatman was in attendance during Tuesday’s practice, and it’s safe to say the training camp opener didn’t paint Grier in the best light.
According to Eatman, the 30-year-old passer played second fiddle to Milton, who got “nearly as many (reps) as Prescott,” as the second and third offensive units took the field “often. ”
“Milton is getting plenty of reps and looks to be in the lead for any competition to be Prescott’s backup,” Eatman wrote.
Considering how Milton was given all those reps despite having a mistake-filled practice that included mistimed throws and a pair of fumbles, it’s clear that the Cowboys aren’t that high on Grier.
Despite having spent parts of three seasons across two stints in Dallas, all signs point to the ex-West Virginia product being the QB3 or left off the team altogether.
The truth is that Grier hasn’t shown much promise, even though he’s about to start his seventh NFL season.
The 30-year-old quarterback has only made two starts, and both of them came in his rookie season with the Carolina Panthers, resulting in his going 28-of-52 (53.8%) in the pocket for 228 passing yards and four interceptions with a 33.2 passer rating.
Milton was only drafted 193rd overall by the Patriots last year, but he’s already shown more promise than his more experienced counterpart.
The 6-foot-5 gunslinger led the Patriots to a 23-16 win over the Buffalo Bills in Week 18, completing 75.9% of his passes for 241 passing yards and a TD while adding another 16 yards and a rushing score on 10 carries.
If that wasn’t impressive enough, Milton also led all Week 18 quarterbacks when it came to offensive (95.8) and passing (94.9) grades on Pro Football Focus.
Even when he isn’t perfect, it’s clear that the Cowboys have plenty of confidence in Milton.
In other words, Grier must remain as perfect as possible throughout the rest of training, not only if he wants to be the QB2, but also if he wants to still be on the roster come Week 1.
