The New York Yankees are facing some scrutiny after a harsh loss to the division rival Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday.
The Yankees suffered their sixth loss in the last seven games at the Blue Jays’ Rogers Centre after committing four errors, underscoring some concerns about their defense. But before the game began, manager Aaron Boone acknowledged some public scrutiny over the health of franchise slugger Aaron Judge.
In the midst of the Yankees’ Tuesday matchup with the Blue Jays, YES Network’s John Flaherty raised that concern over Judge’s reaction to a running catch.
“Grimacing in pain there,” Flaherty said following the play, per NJ.com’s Randy Miller. “I don’t know what’s going on. He’s gripping his right hand. Something’s going on there.”
Injury concerns for Judge grew when it was announced he would be limited to a designated hitter role in Wednesday’s game. But Boone offered some assurance when he responded to those concerns.
“He’s OK,” Boone said, according to Miller. “It’s not much. It’s just probably a throw that didn’t feel great. He’s not DHing because of that. I think he’s alright.”
Boone added that Judge’s break from defense was determined in advance, with Giancarlo Stanton in need of a day off and the manager looking to keep Judge off of the Rogers Centre’s artificial turf.
“I think for (Judge) those are good days, especially because he’s played every game this year,” Boone said, per Miller. “To get him those (DH) days, especially on the days we come where it’s turf or it’s a change of surface that you’re playing on can be a little taxing. I think they matter.”
Still, in the midst of a historic season when he’s carrying much of the load for the Yankees’ offense, Judge is as critical to the team as ever. So fans might not feel totally reassured until they see him making plays back in the outfield.
