he Boston Red Sox have reportedly been willing to field trade offers for star outfielder Jarren Duran this year. Duran has a place in the Red Sox’s outfield, but the team seems to like the trio of Roman Anthony, Ceddenne Rafaela, and Wilyer Abreu just as much.
That makes Duran expendable if the right trade offer is presented.
FanSided’s Jake Elman recently predicted the Philadelphia Phillies would offer the Red Sox a package of Mick Abel, Gabriel Rincones Jr., and Keaton Anthony in order to land Duran at the deadline.
“The first part of this trade is self-explanatory. Duran can immediately slot into either left or center field, with Brandon Marsh manning the other spot,” Elman wrote. “Although Duran is well behind last year’s 8.7 bWAR campaign, he’s nonetheless continued beating teams with his baserunning; Duran owns 25 doubles, a league-high 10 triples, and 16 stolen bases through 101 games.
“Abel entered the season as a consensus top-5 prospect in the Phillies’ farm system, though he posted a 5.04 ERA across his first 25 big-league innings. The 2020 No. 15 pick turns 24 in August and could theoretically immediately join the Red Sox’s rotation.”
The big addition here is Abel. The Red Sox could use him in Boston as soon as possible, as their rotation continues to struggle. But beyond Abel, this trade package isn’t enough to land Duran, considering how much team control is left on his deal.
The Red Sox would likely pursue a package centered around Abel and Justin Crawford rather than Rincones.
For Philadelphia, the addition of a potential superstar outfielder would be huge. Duran would place himself at the top of the team’s lineup with players like Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper driving him in. The Phillies’ lineup would be even more dangerous than before.
If the Phillies want to land multiple years of Duran, they’re going to have to give up a lot of prospect capital.
