CHICAGO — The Red Sox have returned right-handed pitcher Tanner Houck (right flexor pronator strain) from his rehab assignment because he remains injured.
His 30-day rehab assignment expired Thursday. He will remain on the IL as he continues to deal with the strain and has a seven-day period before he’s eligible to begin another rehab assignment.
“We’re going to keep him on the IL,” manager Alex Cora said before Boston’s game against the Cubs on Saturday at Wrigley Field. “So that’s what we’ve got right now. I know the trainers are working on him over there in Boston and we’ll have more information in the upcoming days.”
Houck, an All-Star last year, posted an 8.04 ERA (43 ⅔ innings, 39 earned runs) in nine starts for Boston before landing on the 15-day injured list May 14.
The 29-year-old posted a 5.74 ERA (15 ⅔ innings, 10 runs) on 18 hits and six walks while striking out 15 over five rehab outings (four starts). Four of those five outings came with Triple-A Worcester. One was with Double-A Portland.
It took him time to bounce back from some rehab starts and he told MassLive on July 1 that he still had “a little inflammation in the back of the triceps.”
