San Francisco 49ers legend Joe Montana put the romance in professional football. The four-time Super Bowl champion, 69, may be considered one of the greatest NFL quarterbacks of all time — but the celebrated athlete is also a hopeless romantic.

In a newly resurfaced video from an interview with NFL Films, the Niners legend shared the sweet reason he used to call his wife, Jennifer Montana, from the sidelines of a football game.

“I don’t know what made me do it,” he said. “But one day I’d hung up and I’m sittin’ there goin’, ‘Hmmm, I wonder if these things call out.’ So I pick up the phone and I hit—what do you normally— you hit 9, right? Gives you an outside line. I hit 9, got a dial tone, I called my house.”

The interview then cuts to Jennifer Montana, who glows as she adds, “He goes, ‘I’m calling you to say I love you.’”

The athlete later shared that he looked for an outboud phone in every stadium in which he played, hoping to call his wife.

Fans couldn’t get enough of the lovebirds’ story, rushing to the comments section to join the conversation.

Another added, “This is so sweet.”

Joe Montana retired from the NFL in 1995. Though his professional football career has long ended, he remains one of the most lauded quarterbacks in Super Bowl history. He and Jennifer Montana have been married for 39 years.
