The Boston Red Sox will have to make some tough decisions if they want to keep Alex Bregman and still address other needs on their roster this offseason.
Bregman has been a great player for the Red Sox this season. He was an All-Star and is slashing .298/.380/.546 with 11 home runs. After trading Rafael Devers, the team has money to pay him. However, he will not be cheap, according to MLB insider Jon Heyman.

“The belief here is that with Bregman’s great start, a deal would likely have to be around $184M (what he offered to sign with the Tigers), or perhaps even $200M,” Heyman wrote.
If the Red Sox are going to pay Bregman $200 million, it will be tough to spend on other positions of need. They will have to move on from some expensive players to spend on more than just Bregman, and FanSided’s Zachary Rotman predicted Lucas Giolito would be let go to create more spending room.
“Right now, Giolito has a $14 million club option for 2026, but that number rises to $19 million and becomes a mutual option if he can throw at least 140 innings this season,” wrote Rotman. “Right now, Giolito is at 72.1 innings with the entire second half in front of him. 140 innings is certainly possible. Given how he’s pitched, it’ll be tough for the Red Sox to reject any option they have to keep Giolito in town, but a lucrative Bregman contract certainly makes it tougher for the team to commit to Giolito as well. It’ll be interesting to see just how much the Red Sox are willing to spend.”

Giolito signed a two-year, $38 million deal before last season. However, he did not play last year. This season, he has a 3.36 ERA in 13 starts. However, he has a 0.70 ERA in his last six starts. It will be tough to move on, but it’s hard to argue that paying Bregman is not a better move.
