The San Francisco 49ers just paid Brock Purdy the huge contract extension he was seeking.
They wouldn’t trade him now, would they?
CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin thinks, if your mind is bold enough, you can imagine a four-team deal that sends Purdy to the Dolphins, and after lots of machinations, ends up with Kirk Cousins in San Francisco.

The full terms of the wild proposal:
- 49ers get: QB Kirk Cousins (Falcons), 2026 second-round pick (Dolphins), 2026 third-round pick (Saints)
- Dolphins get: QB Brock Purdy (49ers)
- Saints get: QB Tua Tagovailoa (Dolphins)
- Falcons get: C Matt Hennessy (49ers), 2026 fifth-round pick (Saints)
This is how Benjamin explains it:
“The 49ers just paid Purdy, which is completely understandable, but we know Kyle Shanahan has an affinity for his old pal Cousins, and we know Cousins is currently blowing in the wind, awaiting an opportunity as Atlanta’s No. 2. The Purdy-to-Cousins swap might be a downgrade in 2025, but adding a couple of early-round picks could help San Francisco replenish its greater infrastructure.”

It’s hard to imagine the 49ers doing something like this.

If they did, wouldn’t they at least want Tua back, despite all his injury worries?
Cousins has no future and might not even have a present. That really feels like the worst portion of this deal.
The Saints win in a big way to get Tagovailoa for just a couple picks.
San Francisco would shut this idea down at the door, though. But it’s fun to think about.
