BOSTON — The Red Sox have activated right-handed reliever Jordan Hicks from the 15-day IL and optioned righty Zack Kelly to Triple-A Worcester.

Boston made two other roster moves earlier Monday when it reinstated Marcelo Mayer from the bereavement list and optioned Nick Sogard to Worcester. Mayer is batting seventh and playing third base vs. the Reds today.

Boston acquired Hicks from the Giants in the Rafael Devers trade. He was dealing with inflammation in his right big toe. He reached 100.1 mph with his fastball Friday in his second rehab outing for Worcester.

Hicks is expected to serve as a high-leverage, late-inning reliever. He ranks in the 92nd percentile in average fastball velocity (97.3 mph) this season. He had a 6.47 ERA in 13 outings (nine starts) for the Giants.

Kelly left Boston’s 5-3 loss to the Blue Jays on Sunday in the top of the sixth inning due to right oblique tightness.

It initially appeared like Kelly would be headed to the IL.

Asked if Kelly was OK on Monday before the Red Sox optioned him, manager Alex Cora said, “Yeah, yeah. He is.”

There are players fans cheer for, and then there are players fans quietly lean on. Paul Goldschmidt belongs to the second group — and that’s exactly why Cardinals fans don’t always realize just how special he has been. They like him. They respect him. But maybe, just maybe, they should love him a little more while they still can.

Blue Jays Add Former Giants Reliever Tyler Rogers to Bolster Bullpen.

The San Francisco Giants have had a frugal offseason to this point, with plenty of reports and rumors that frugality will be a central theme over the next few days, weeks, and months. And now we have perhaps the most painful example of it yet, as the team did not sign the one player that everyone expected them to add this offseason: reliever Tyler Rogers.
