The Boston Red Sox starting rotation has a 4.29 ERA this season. Garrett Crochet has been great, but the rest of the rotation has been inconsistent, to say the least.
Walker Buehler was one of the Red Sox’s offseason acquisitions, but he has not met expectations. With Hunter Dobbins and Kutter Crawford on the injured list, the Red Sox did not have many options to change the rotation.
Crawford was on the injured list from the beginning of the season with right patellar tendinopathy. He made 33 starts last season, but his season is most likely over before it ever started. According to The Boston Globe’s Tim Healey, Alex Cora revealed that Crawford will undergo wrist surgery and will likely not pitch this year.
Cora revealed that his wrist injury was “the result of an off-field accident,” Healey wrote on X. However, Cora also noted that it was not a result of something “irresponsible,” per Healey.
Crawford had a 4.36 ERA last year, so it’s unlikely he would have saved the Red Sox rotation. However, he may have been a better option at this point than some of their other starters.
The Red Sox are still within striking distance of a postseason berth, entering play on Wednesday. If they want to make the postseason, they will need to find a way to surround Crochet with more quality starters in the rotation. They may have to use the trade deadline to do that.
