The Dallas Cowboys will have to make some tough decisions over the next few weeks to months. With Trevon Diggs, an All-Pro player in the secondary, likely out for some of the beginning of the season due to his knee injury, it remains uncertain what the Cowboys plan to do. However, when Diggs returns, or if the Cowboys find out that he could return sometime during the first few weeks of the campaign, it could have an impact on others on the roster.

Cowboys to Make Decision in Secondary

When searching for potential cut candidates around the NFL, ClutchPoints recently predicted that the Dallas Cowboys would cut ties with a player in the secondary in the form of Andrew Booth. Booth, a second-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings, appeared in seven games for the Cowboys last season.

“Booth also got caught in the draft crunch. The Cowboys picked Shavon Revel in Round 3. It’s true Revel is trying to come back from an injury, but his abilities when healthy put him in front of Booth,” they wrote .

“The Cowboys also added three undrafted free agents at the cornerback position. There are plenty of signs they weren’t satisfied with the play of Booth in 2024. But the injury status of Revel and Trevon Diggs could give Booth a second chance to show what he’s got. Of course, the secondary could be stronger if the Cowboys get the contract situation worked out with Parsons and he displays the type of production that again disrupts opposing offenses.”

Why Would Cowboys Cut Andrew Booth?

Booth had to see action because of Digg’s injury, appearing in seven games and starting in two.

He only had one pass deflection, and according to Pro Football Reference, he allowed an 80% completion rate when targeted. He was targeted 15 times, allowing 12 completions for 193 yards and two touchdowns.

He hasn’t found much success in the NFL and isn’t someone the Dallas Cowboys can go into Week 1 with as a starter.

When examining this issue, Sports Illustrated recently urged the Cowboys to pursue another target. While they considered attempting to sign Asante Samuel Jr., who was also drafted in the second round, the Cowboys will likely have to get a move on if they want to get something done.

Samuel has been on the free agency market the entire offseason, and soon enough, he’ll find a new team.

“With DaRon Bland working in the slot, the Cowboys had Andrew Booth and Kaiir Elam on the outside. While Elam performed better than expected, the Cowboys don’t want to go into Week 1 with that starting unit.

“With Trevon Diggs and rookie Shavon Revel Jr. still not healed from offseason knee surgery, that very well could be the case. That’s why they should be on the lookout for another capable starter, which they could in Asante Samuel Jr,” Randy Gurzi wrote.

However, as SI noted, going into Week 1 with this secondary would be a disaster.

Sure, the Cowboys will be in a much different position when Diggs and Shavon Revel Jr. return, but it remains uncertain when that will happen. The last thing they want is to get an early deficit in the standings because of the injuries they’ve faced.
