BREAKING: This Sandy Alcantara trade proposal for Orioles is totally unhinged

Former Major League Baseball general manager Jim Bowden proposed a Sandy Alcantara trade for the Chicago Cubs earlier this week that was indirectly laughed at by Cubs President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer.

The mock trade had the Cubs sending three Top 100 prospects as part of their package for Alcantara, who, despite being a former Cy Young Award winner, has struggled considerably this season.

However, his bad ideas were not limited to the Cubs as the Baltimore Orioles did not escape his gaze.

Philadelphia Phillies v Miami Marlins

When asked about the Cubs trade during an appearance on a local Chicago radio station, Hoyer playfully dismissed the idea.

“Listen, I think the trade deadline is sort of like (the) NFL Draft in which it almost becomes its own industry,” Hoyer said. “I know that a lot of people have opinions about what people should do, and listen, it’s fun. I like the fact that people are always talking about the trade deadline, but ultimately, I don’t read that stuff for a reason,” Hoyer mentioned as part of his interview.

I know what you’re thinking, we came to read about the Orioles, why in the world do we care about a wild Cubs’ trade idea? Well, the reason is that Bowden has doubled down on outrageous Alcantara trade packages, and this time, it includes the Orioles.

In drawing up a trade to save the Orioles’ Wild-Card chances, Bowden has Baltimore sending Samuel Basallo, Cade Povich, and Heston Kjerstad to the Marlins in exchange for Alcantara.

Bowden states that with the Orioles needing a starting pitcher, Alcantara could check that box as Baltimore looks to salvage their season.

Former GM’s Orioles trade pitch for Sandy Alcantara is pure chaos

First and foremost, the Orioles are not going to be buyers at the MLB Trade Deadline. Entering the weekend with their Wild-Card chances already on life support, it seems destined that the Orioles will be sellers at the deadline.

That selling mindset is not going to have them in a position to be the top bidder for Alcantara, who could be among the top starting pitchers available for contenders.

It’s also a mindset that won’t have the Orioles giving their top prospect, not to mention one of baseball’s best prospects, in any trade. If anything, the biggest impact Basallo will have in 2025 will be making his Major League debut with the Orioles.

Even when the Orioles were perceived as buyers over recent years, the team shied away from the asking prices of top pitchers such as Dylan Cease and typically chose to just hoard their prospects.

There’s simply no world where the Orioles’ front office entertains such an insane trade for Alcantara.
