Chiefs Make 2 New Signings After Minicamp: Report

The Kansas City Chiefs made two signings after mandatory minicamp.

The Kansas City Chiefs have officially begun summer break, but the work doesn’t stop behind the scenes, as the front office agreed to terms on two post-minicamp signings on the evening of June 19 — the headliner being tight end Geor’Quarius Spivey once again.

Spivey made his KC return earlier this week via a minicamp invite. He was one of four tryouts at the time, and rookie interior offensive lineman Joe Lombard was one of the other three.

Both reportedly signed to the 90-man roster on Thursday as their respective agencies announced the good news.

“Inked ✍️ time to get to work @_gspivey11 [Geor’Quarius Spivey],” AthElite Agency captioned an Instagram post, which displayed the tight end back in his Chiefs uniform.

Similarly, OSMG sports agency leaked the Lombard signing to KPRC 2 NFL insider Aaron Wilson, who promptly reported it on X.

Before long, Chiefs Digest beat writer Matt Derrick commented on the two additions, noting: “Another tryout player [Lombard] from minicamp signing with the Chiefs. The club is also signing TE Geor’Quarius Spivey. No word yet on corresponding moves.”

Geor’Quarius Spivey Is Signing With the Chiefs for the Second Time After His Third KC Tryout at Minicamp

Spivey spent his 2024 training camp and preseason with the Chiefs, but A-to-Z Sports Kansas City reporter Charles Goldman reminded readers that “this actually marked the third time that TE Geor’Quarius Spivey has tried out for the Chiefs,” during an article on June 19.

“He was initially among the 37 rookie minicamp tryouts in 2024 after going undrafted in the NFL Draft,” the KC reporter explained. “[Then, Spivey] had a tryout at training camp last year that ultimately landed him on the 90-man offseason roster through the preseason. He didn’t make it through 53-man roster cuts and wasn’t signed to the practice squad following his release.”

Spivey is a 6-foot-5 pass-catching tight end who split time between Mississippi State and TCU in college. He failed to make a notable impact during the preseason last summer, catching his only target for a total of seven yards.

This spring, Spivey showcased his potential in the UFL, suiting up for the Houston Roughnecks. He caught 7-of-13 targets for 65 yards with the Roughnecks, but wasn’t able to score a touchdown.

The Chiefs have been banged up a tight end all spring despite getting superstar Travis Kelce back at minicamp. Kelce wasn’t injured throughout OTAs, he was just vacationing, but he appeared to be in great shape upon his return.

It’s unclear if second-year tight end Jared Wiley will be ready for the start of training camp after suffering a torn ACL last season. Head coach Andy Reid hinted that he’s trending in the right direction on June 19, but he wasn’t willing to make any guarantees.

Undrafted rookie Tre Watson has also missed a bunch of practices this spring, although the Chiefs did not provide much detail on his absence.

Chiefs Take a Flier on Yet Another UDFA Offensive Lineman

The Chiefs have had great success with undrafted offensive linemen in the past, especially on the interior. Mike Caliendo is one recent example of this, and Lombard is hoping to become another.

Going by “Joey” Lombard on the South Dakota football website, his collegiate team has him listed at 6-foot-5 and 305 pounds.

Lombard had a long career at South Dakota, appearing in shortened seasons in 2019 and 2020 before more lengthy stints as a starter from 2021 through 2024. His wealth of experience and playing time no doubt interested the Chiefs as they scoured the UDFA market.

Per his collegiate bio page, Lombard’s honors include “Second Team All-American (AP, 2024), Third Team All-American (STATS Perform, 2024), First Team All-MVFC (2024), and Second Team All-MVFC (2023).

His former team highlighted the fact that Lombard started 48 total games for them on their offensive line.
