The Dallas Cowboys appear to be in some serious hot water.
Having lost five of their last seven games, the Cowboys look to be on the brink of total collapse. Their star quarterback, Dak Prescott, is out for at least the next four games, and the rest of the NFC playoff picture is beginning to leave Dallas in the dust at 3-5.
A key part of the Cowboys’ losing stretch has been the loss of 11-year veteran DeMarcus Lawrence, who has been a stalwart his entire career at defensive end for Dallas. Soon, Lawrence will be come a free agent, and the Cowboys could lose him for good this time.
The Cowboys would hate to see Lawrence stay in the NFC East, but he might just end up there anyway. Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report recently named the upstart Washington Commanders as a top free-agent destination for the 32-year-old pass rusher.
“Lawrence should appeal to teams seeking pass-rush help or an improved run defense, though he’s best suited for those utilizing a four-man front,” Knox said.
“Washington (is) a sensible landing spot—and not entirely because former Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn is now the head coach. Quinn’s presence would undoubtedly be part of the equation, but the Commanders are also set to potentially lose both Dante Fowler Jr. and Clelin Ferrell in 2025 free agency.”
Lawrence had a fantastic first four games this season, racking up three sacks, four tackles for loss, and a forced fumble. He also made the last two Pro Bowls, so he should be able to meet or exceed the three-year, $40 million contract he signed with the Cowboys before the 2022 season.
The Commanders are certainly a team on the rise, and acquiring Lawrence to boost the pass rush would only make Washington more formidable moving forward. Facing their longtime superstar twice a year could be a nightmare scenario for Dallas in years to come.
